Here’s a look back at the life and career of comic book legend Stan Lee.

Comic book legend Stan Lee died on Monday at the age of 95, and his fans, friends and colleagues took to social media to commemorate the iconic Marvel comics creator.
Among those who spoke out were some of Marvel’s biggest stars, including “Captain America” star Chris Evans, “Iron Man” front man Robert Downey Jr. and “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor Chris Pratt.
Hugh Jackman, who played Wolverine in the “X-Men” franchise, and “Guardians of the Galaxy” stars Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana also sent their appreciation.
“For decades he provided both young and old with adventure, escape, comfort, confidence, inspiration, strength, friendship and joy,” Evans tweeted. “He exuded love and kindness and will leave an indelible mark on so, so, so many lives.”
“I owe it all to you,” Downey Jr. tweeted. “Rest In Peace Stan.”
“Thanks for everything Stan Lee! What a life, so well lived,” wrote Pratt, who plays Star-Lord. “I consider myself extraordinarily lucky to have gotten to meet you and to have played in the world you created.”
Tom Holland, who portrays Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe, said no one is more “indebted to this guy…than me.”
“The father of Marvel has made so many people so incredibly happy. What a life and what a thing to have achieved. Rest in peace Stan,” he wrote on Instagram.
Ryan Reynolds posted an image of Lee in 2016’s “Deadpool.” The famed comic-book icon made dozens of cameos in Marvel movies and television shows.
“Damn… RIP Stan. Thanks for everything,” Reynolds wrote.
“We’ve lost a creative genius,” wrote Hugh Jackman, who played Wolverine in the “X-Men” franchise. “I’m proud to have been a small part of his legacy and …. To have helped bring one of his characters to life.”
Saldana, who portrays Gamora in the Marvel universe, posted a picture of herself dressed in character alongside Lee and former “Guardians of the Galaxy” director James Gunn.
“Today we lost one of the greats. @TheRealStanLee, you were a inspiration and superhero to us all. Thank you for contributing so much- and giving us all something to aspire to!”
Mark Ruffalo, who brings Bruce Banner and the Hulk to life in the Marvel Universe, said goodbye to “Uncle Stan.”
“You have made the world a better place through the power of modern mythology and your love of this messy business of being human,” he wrote. “You let us be extra human… superhuman even. I am deeply honored to have been a small part in the Stan Lee constellation.”
Sebastian Stan, who plays the Winter Solider in Marvel movies, said “I wouldn’t be here without you.” “Thank you great legend. You will be missed,” he added.
Samuel L. Jackson, who plays Nick Fury in the Marvel Universe, thanked Lee “for the escape from this world,” adding “You made so many believe in the good, the heroic, the villainous, the exciting, most of all, you were giving & gracious to us all. RIP”
Jessica Alba reflected on the importance her role in the Marvel Universe had one her life: “The experience I had on #thefantasticfour playing #suestorm #invisiblewoman was so meaningful as a young actress and made a huge impact on me.”
“Taking a moment to thank the great @therealstanlee for his kindness and it was a huge honor to be part of your universe. . We will miss you #StanLee,” she added.
Lee, who served in the U.S. Army from from 1942-1945, died as Veteran’s Day was being observed in the United States. His passing earned a tweet from the U.S. Army.
“Rest in peace, Soldier,” the tweet read. “… We are deeply grateful for his service to our country and for his tremendous support to servicemembers. #Excelsior!”
Seth Green, who voiced Howard the Duck in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” wrote that Lee “represents the best of us.”
“How grateful I am for his existence and influence,” he continued. “He lived to see his creations shape the world, and his legacy will inspire generations to come. But I’ll miss him. EXCELCIOR!!”
Mark Hamill, Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars,” sung high praise of Lee’s cultural and personal impacts.
“He was everything you hoped he would be & MORE,” he wrote. “I loved this man & will never stop missing him. They say you should never meet a childhood idol. They are wrong.”
Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, celebrated Lee’s “extraordinary legacy that will outlive us all.”
“No one has had more of an impact on my career and everything we do at Marvel Studios than Stan Lee,” he wrote. “Our thoughts are with his daughter, his family, and his millions of fans.”
Doug Jones, the actor who played Silver Surfer in “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer,” shared a handful of photos with Lee over the years.
“What can I say about the loss of a visionary who created one of my favorite characters I’ve ever played?” Jones wrote. “Stan Lee’s fun-loving wit, charm, and poetic legacy will keep him alive for generations to come. My heart hurts, and he will be sorely missed.”
Kat Dennings, who played Darcy Lewis in “Thor,” tweeted a photo with Lee on a red carpet.
“It was an honor to be a small part of his universe,” she wrote.
Allegra Acosta, who plays Molly Hernandez in “Marvel’s Runaways” on Hulu, shared a photo with Lee from set.
“I had the honor of being a part of his universe and working with him,” she wrote. “Even though he has passed, his legacy will forever flourish and thrive.”
Jamie Lee Curtis praised Lee’s “creativity and imagination.”
“You were and will always be a SUPER HERO!” she exclaimed.
Larry King lauded Lee as “a real-life superhero.”
“Stan Lee was a visionary, who elevated imaginations across the globe,” wrote King. “I’m grateful for the time I got to spend with him. Rest peacefully, Stan.”
Jimmy Kimmel tweeted a drawing of Stan Lee he created as a kid.
“At age 7, I drew this weird portrait of Stan Lee and asked my Mom to send it to him,” the late night host wrote. “Thankfully she didn’t because 30+ years later, I got to give it to the great one in person.”
“Rest in Peace Stan Lee. I talk/think about things you imagined every single day,” tweeted Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz.
George Takei listed just a few of Lee’s many creations that “inspired millions.”
“His stories will live on and continue to ignite the imaginations of generations to come,” Takei wrote. “Rest with the stars, great sir.”
“He lives forever through his work. What a giant,” wrote Lin-Manuel Miranda. “With great power comes immortality.”
“Goosebumps” author R.L. Sine called Lee “one of our great story-tellers.”
Kiss front man Gene Simmons expressed his gratitude to the comic for improving his early days.
“To Stan Lee: Thank you for making my childhood so much more exciting with your astonishing superhero characters,” he tweeted. “Thank you for inspiring me to think and dream big. Thank you for the Hulk, Thor, Fantastic Four and many others. You will be sadly missed. RIP.”
Ryan Reynolds, who has portrayed anti-hero Deadpool in two features tweeted “Thanks for everything.”
Actor Seth Rogen thanked Lee for “making people who feel different realize they are special.”
“The many worlds of imagination & delight you created for humanity will last forever,” wrote Elon Musk.
The official Twitter account for DC Comics shared a touching tribute to Lee, using his catchphrase “Excelsior.”
“He changed the way we look at heroes, and modern comics will always bear his indelible mark,” the tweet read. “His infectious enthusiasm reminded us why we all fell in love with these stories in the first place. Excelsior, Stan.”
Disney tweeted a statement from CEO Bob Iger:
“Stan Lee was as extraordinary as the characters he created. A super hero in his own right to Marvel fans around the world, Stan had the power to inspire, to entertain, and to connect.”
Sharing a photo of one of Lee’s superheroes, Spider-Man, The Academy tweeted “Today, we lost a real-life superhero. Stan Lee, thank you for everything.”
“We are grateful for your imagination,” wrote the official Golden Globe Awards account.
Terry Crews’ tribute was short and sweet. “Rest In Peace Stan Lee.” he tweeted.
Rapper Travis Scott tweeted his appreciate to Lee “for everything”.
Rosario Dawson wished for Lee to “Rest In Paradise.”
She added, “Thank you for your imagination, creativity, tenacity, inspiration and love!!!”
Ice-T recalled “the honor” of meeting Lee. “95 what a life…” he tweeted.
For Josh Groban, Lee’s stories were a bright spot. “Thank you for making my childhood, teen years and adulthood so fun,” he tweeted, “especially during darker days.”
Al Roker shared a photo alongside Lee, both wearing wide smiles.
“A sad day for so many of us growing up reading and watching the great @therealstanlee creations,” the “Today” co-anchor tweeted. “With @Marvel he elevated the comic book with great writing and superheroes who had problems just like us. #excelsior His passing at 95 is sad, but he’s just waiting for us in #asgard”
“R.I.P Stan Lee, your imagination fueled each of our childhoods, making us believe we could be superheroes, even if only in regular everyday situations,” tweeted actor/comedian Jay Pharoah. “You will be greatly missed, rest easy my g”
“A few years ago we got a chance to hang out with the legend,” tweeted rapper Juicy J. “You will be missed prayers up to the family friends & fans.”
