The era of Chris Evans as Captain America may soon be over.

The actor, who plays the popular character of Marvel since 2011 Captain America: the first avenger, announced Thursday on Twitter that he had officially ended with filming Avengers – and apparently finished playing Cape Town.

"It was the least we could say. Playing this role in the past 8 years has been an honor. To all who are in front of the camera, behind the camera and in the audience, thank you for the memories! An eternal gratitude, "said Evans, 37, with fans immediately flooding replies with thank-you messages and some saying they were just as emotional.

Evans was previously referring to the superhero's retirement in a New York Times profile, where he said, "You want to get off the train before they push you."

After the original, Evans has taken over his character in the movie The 2012 Avengers, 2014 Captain America: The Winter Soldier, 2015 Avengers: the era of Ultron2016 Captain America: Civil War and this year Avengers: Infinity War. Evans will also be showing in the still untitled Avengers 4.

Evans has forged close friendships with the rest of the Avengers over the past 8 years of filming. He even had a matching tattoo with Scarlett Johansson, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo being the sole holder of the main cast.

They are all ready to resume their roles in Avengers 4, due out on May 3, 2019.
