Paul was traded to the Rockets of the Clippers' last off-season in a successful contract that sent several pieces including Lou Williams, Patrick Beverley and a selection of first round. Los Angeles, but the price was worth it as the Rockets climbed to the top of the Western Conference in the 2017-2018 season. The 65-17 team record was the best mark of any team in Paul's career.
The Rockets reached the Western Conference finals, but had to swallow a bitter pill when Paul fell with a hamstring injury. Even though the Warriors came back 3-2, the Rockets were promising as the team that nearly ended the Warriors' four-year reign during the conference.
This agreement will keep the rear of the Rockets and James Harden Elite under control of the 2022-23 season. There would have been tension between Paul and the Rockets for the duration of his next contract, with the team appearing to have won by signing the 33-year contract with one year less than the five-year mark
. Thus, the Rockets will focus on their remaining free agents, including center Clint Capela, who should cash in after a breakout season anchoring the Houston defense.
