HOUSTON – The Boston Red Sox's ace, Chris Sale, still felt weak Wednesday and will not start the fifth game of the American League series.
Sale played the away game 10-15 minutes before the fourth game in Houston, but manager Alex Cora said he had not started the session as planned.
Cora said the lean left handed was still feeling weak and that he had lost weight due to a stomach illness that had forced him to spend a night at the hospital after starting the first match of the ALCS against the Astros.
"He feels better compared to yesterday, but physically he is not there yet," Cora said before the fourth match. "So, I think if necessary, he'll start the sixth match, he feels he'll be ready for that one, and we're going from there."
The Red Sox took a 2-1 lead in the best run of seven in Wednesday night's game. The sixth game, if necessary, would be held Saturday night in Boston.
Dave Dombrowski, president of the team's baseball operations, said Sale had told him, "He's fine and he'll be ready to go on Saturday."
Cora did not announce a starter for the fifth match, adding that this decision would be dictated by the result of the fourth match.
