Chronic debilitating disease found in deer in Mississippi

JACKSON, Miss. (Miss. Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks) A one and a half year old white-tailed deer harvested on October 8, 2018 in Pontotoc County was tested positive for detection of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) following the initial tests.

It's the second Mississippi animal to have achieved the positive result for this deadly disease for white-tailed deer. A sample will be sent to the National Veterinary Science Laboratory in Iowa for an additional definitive test.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks will wait for the final results before implementing its action plan for the destruction of pets.

The MDWFP encourages hunters to participate in CWD surveillance efforts by voluntarily submitting samples for testing. A list of CWD sample collection locations is available at www.mdwfp.com/cwd.
