LOS ANGELES – Tito Ortiz believes Chuck Liddell will not reveal his full set of cards as the cameras are geared up for training before the trilogy later this month.
In the run-up to Liddell's third meeting (21-8) and Ortiz (19-12-1), which will take place on November 24 at the Forum in Inglewood, California, and will be broadcast on pay-per-view television, "The Iceman" has published a number of training clips. Reactions were largely negative for the former UFC champion, who returns to the MMA after more than eight years of retirement.
Ortiz watched all of Liddell's training sequences. He explained that his reaction was one of skepticism.
"I think he's carrying sandbags," Ortiz told reporters, including MMAjunkie, at the Kings MMA's public training session in West Hollywood, California today. I hope that it is not so slow. The night will be short for him if he is so slow.
"I looked at it and had to take a step back and think about the promotion, the physiological side. Does he want to make sure to slow down a bit to make me think he's so slow? But at the same time, I'm ready for it to be super fast. "
The match between 43-year-old Ortiz and 48-year-old Liddell will mark the third meeting between former UFC light heavyweight title holders. Ortiz was arrested with strikes in the second round at UFC 47 in April 2004, then rejected by TKO in the third round of the rematch at UFC 66 in December 2006.
During Liddell's retirement, Ortiz participated nine times in the competition. His most recent bout was a bid victory over Chael Sonnen at the Bellator 170 in January 2017. He retired after this fight, but only returned for the long-time rival opportunity.
"This fight represents the world for me," said Ortiz. "I would not have put 18 weeks in this project. I would not have put the grinding. I would not sacrifice Thanksgiving. I will not have a Thanksgiving this year. For the first time in 21 years, I will not have Thanksgiving. My Thanksgiving must wait for Sunday. My children understand and they say to themselves, "Dad, we understand, it's good. We want you to win. No matter what it takes to win, we want you to do it. It's just a factor. That's how much this fight means to me. I am willing to sacrifice everything for this to happen, and I will raise my hand. "
Despite the results of their previous fights, Ortiz said he was confident he would have the last word to laugh about Liddell. He believes all the pressure is on his opponent and said the benefits this time are on his side.
"His job is to try knocking me out of the first lap," said Ortiz. "Go ahead, prove it. I'm willing to see if he can try to prove it, because I'm going to prove that I'm going to asshole him. I will show that I am a better fighter, I will show that I am more aggressive. I will show that I am stronger, faster than he has ever seen me.
"I do not think of what I saw as Chuck Liddell did (during training) – I think of Chuck Liddell who beat me first and second time. Chuck Liddell I'm ready to fight. "
