A police officer from Cicero was shot dead Thursday afternoon in a gunfire near the border between Chicago and the western suburbs, leaving a suspect in serious condition.

The shooting took place near the exit of Cicero on the Stevenson highway around 17:05. during peak commuting times, Cicero police said.

Cicero police attempted to stop a traffic violation vehicle in the 3900 block of South Cicero Avenue when the driver took off, according to Cicero Police Commissioner Jerry Chlada Jr.

Officers put the vehicle in the south Stevenson ramp, said Chlada. The driver came out and fired several shots with an automatic weapon on two officers, according to Cicero officials.

31-year-old Luis Duarte was hit several times, leaving injuries to his arm, leg and side, officials said. Duarte, who has been at the Cicero Police Department for about four years, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital. Late Thursday, he was healthy after an operation.

Duarte's wife, parents and brothers and sisters were in the hospital while undergoing surgery, the authorities said.

The alleged gunman then ran north on Cicero and shot another officer who chased him, said Chlada. A man with a concealed transport permit driving south on Cicero in heavy traffic got out of his car and shot at the suspect, said Chlada.

"We were fortunate to have a citizen on the street who is a hidden carrier and he fired shots with this offender who was hit once," said Chlada.

The police did not disclose additional information on the concealed briefcase, and the person who shot the suspect was not clear.

The suspect was in serious condition in a local hospital, Chicago police said.

Cicero City President Larry Dominick met with reporters outside the Mount Sinai Hospital and thanked the Cicero and Chicago police officers who responded to the request. shootings, as well as the citizen who shot the suspect.

"The officer is pretty good at being shot at a number of times," Dominick said.

Chicago police investigate the incident while Illinois State Police investigate the use of force by Cicero police.
