Claire and Jamie discover America

From Scotland to Jamaica and now to the United States not yet, Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) continued their journey on Sunday 4 November Outlander has returned for his fourth season. The last time we saw the Frasers, they had survived a series of high seas adventures, rescued Jamie's nephew, Ian, from the evil Geillis Duncan, and had safely landed in America where a well-deserved rest waits. But how long can the happy couple stay so, as strangers in a young nation on the brink of a bloody revolution? Here is everything that happened during the premiere, "America the Beautiful".

A day at the gallows

We open in 1767 in North Carolina, on a beautiful day … for a hanging. One of Jamie's compatriots, Hayes (James Allenby-Kirk), is executed for murder despite the best attempts to free his friends. Hayes tells Jamie that he can stand the problem when he can only look at a friendly face while he's going away – but as soon as Hayes is dead, a fight will be fired and several other convicts pause.

That night, surreptitiously carrying Hayes' body into a churchyard, the group discovers a stowaway: one of the escaped prisoners is hidden in his basket. He calls Bonnet (Ed Speleers), and he begs Claire and Jamie to lead him safely in front of the soldiers looking for him, so he can join his friends in a nearby river port. Although Bonnet is a self-described hijacker, he has just heard the group discuss the gem hiding she plans to sell – not to mention the fact He looks like a human weasel – Claire and Jamie agree to help him, sneaking through the checkpoint and letting him find his crew. If this does not appear to you at the moment as a terrible idea that they will regret later, you have clearly never seen this show before.

Business and pleasure

After a sexy night of camping, Claire and Jamie return to town for a dinner at the governor's home. it is here that they plan to sell a ruby for enough money to buy back the trip to Scotland. The evening is a success (apart from a colonial bitch who defeats Claire's hairstyle at dinner) and includes a surprising offer from the governor: he wants to give Jamie a land grant to settle in the area, hoping perhaps an experienced soldier will prove to be a useful ally on the road. Claire emphasizes that aligning with the English will put them back on the wrong side of the story, but Jamie says that he would like to help shape the country that his daughter will one day call home; which is a very nice idea. no way answers Claire's very legitimate concerns.

Nevertheless, they decide to stay – along with their friends, including Fergus (Cesar Domboy) and Marsali (Lauren Lyle), who is pregnant. (This is a surprise, but perhaps Claire's herbal birth control is not 100% reliable.)

Roll on the river

With plans in place to settle in America, the gang goes to River Run, a property owned by Jamie's aunt (who has been married three times to men who do not keep well – or maybe TOO conveniently – dying). It's all beautiful and idyllic – Claire is delighted to hear that the black man at the helm is a free man, not a slave – so naturally, it's the other shoe that falls.

As the group sleeps, the boat is suddenly overtaken by a gang of thugs led bysurpriiiiiiise) Bonnet, in a brutal scene that unfolds to the sound of Ray Charles singing "America the Beautiful". Jamie is beaten and robbed, his right arm is horribly murdered and when a sobbing Claire tries to swallow his rings rather than let Bonnet take them, he puts his disgusting fingers in his mouth and pulls one out – that of Jamie – for free. The episode ends with Jamie still on his knees, looking absolutely furious even as Bonnet's men kick him in the ribs. And do not forget to be on the wrong side of history: with all that he had in Bonnet's pockets, this land grant may be their only hope.

Outlander is broadcast on Starz on Sunday at 21h ET.
