LONDON – Hundreds of protesters gathered in central London blocked the main bridges in the capital and called on the government to take climate change seriously.

A group called "Rebellion of Extinction" encouraged sit-ins on bridges on Saturday as part of a coordinated week of action across the country.

The metropolitan police said the emergency vehicles prevented them from crossing London because of the "blockade" of five bridges. The force said it had asked all protesters to gather at Westminster Bridge, where officers can facilitate the legal protest.

About two dozen people were arrested on Monday after protesters blocked traffic and stuck to the doors of the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
