Clinton security clearance withdrawn at his request

The state department added in the letter to Grassley that five of Clinton's aides had also had their security clearance revoked.

Four of the names are expurgated, but Cheryl Mills, who was Clinton's chief of staff, appeared in the email.

"As we had previously informed the committee, these people had been allowed access to classified information through a request from Secretary Clinton appointing them as researchers," added Faulkner.

It was not clear right away whether the state department had allowed Grassley to publish the letter.

In the letter, Faulkner asked Grassley to "protect her" and said that they would not release her for release by handing the letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The letter includes a note stating that Grassley has authorized its publication.
