The northwestern part of the state sees the first showers of a series of strong storms heading toward Georgia on Thursday, but the Atlanta subway is dry at lunch.
Traffic is low for the noon route, according to the WSB's 24-hour traffic center. There are some construction projects that are slowing downtown drivers, including work in a right lane heading north on Peachtree Street and 26th Street.
Most of Atlanta's highways move at interstate speeds. The Traffic Center is monitoring a slow zone of I-20 West on Flat Shoals Road, where a wreck is blocking a left lane and the high-occupancy vehicle lane.
It will probably be a different scenario for the evening ride.
According to Channel 2 Action News, the strong-to-strong storm system is expected to move to central-western Georgia between noon and 3 pm At 4 pm, the bulk of the storms are expected to take place in the Atlanta subway.
It will bring a lot of rain and the possibility of extreme weather, especially for southwestern Atlanta counties, said Channel 2 meteorologist Katie Walls.
Hot air from the Gulf of Mexico feeds a cold front to the west, according to Channel 2. The system crossed the Gulf States on Thursday morning and several tornado warnings were in progress. It should lose intensity as it reaches Georgia.
"On the five potential extreme weather levels, we're at one," Walls said. "This is mainly due to the risk of high winds in some of these storms. An isolated tornado warning can not be excluded. "
According to Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton, the greatest risk of extreme weather is limited to southwestern Georgia, the closest to its source of energy. At 8 pm, Minton announced that the storms would leave Georgia.
"At a minimum, the system will produce widespread rain in the afternoon," Walls said. "There will be impacts on the afternoon / evening trip."
At noon, temperatures reached a high of 71 degrees in Atlanta.
Friday has a 40% chance of rain, less than the 80% of Thursday. Friday's downpours "will not be as intense as today," she said.
"The cold front itself will not show up here until Friday, when we could have some isolated showers behind this system," Minton said.
The North Georgia weather calms down and improves for the weekend, according to Channel 2, while it should be getting a lot colder with diving downs in the 40s.
