COLUMBUS COUNTY, N.-C. – Josephine Horne climbed aboard a 16-foot Coast Guard punt boat from her almost underwater trailer.

But while she was inhaling from her oxygen tank, she looked at her 10 beagles still in cages. Some swam, desperately trying to climb on the sides. Their cries and shouts echoed throughout the wooded area.

Another canoe stopped and Mitchell Moretti, a member of the Coast Guard, jumped out, hurrying to grab a white and brown beagle, barely above the water.

"If we had arrived here a few minutes later, I do not know if these guys would have done it," he said.

Quickly, the red military "war eagle" boat was filling with tails while the anxiety that filled the faces of the coastguard turned into smiles.

"We have a boat full of beagles!" Said Tyler Elliott, a member of the crew, laughing. "It's the best day of my life!"

The rescue turned into a kind of comic skit, some of the dogs jumping out of the ship, forcing the limbs to chase the puppies in water at the waist. Some of the dogs also used the boat as a personal bathroom once they were pulled safely.

"Is he running away?" Moretti said with a smile. The rest of the group started to laugh.

Horne and her husband, Jackie, said they were initially evacuated to a parent but returned to their caravan because the wind and rains were gone.

"It seemed like everything was fine. It was good, "she said. "It's like it's coming from nowhere at once."

The Hornes said that they were relieved to learn that their dogs were safe, as well as their neighbor's pit bulls.

"Thank you my god," she said. "You can not replace some things."
