ATLANTA, GA – One of the world's most iconic consumer brands is considering entering the cannabis market. Atlanta-based Coca-Cola is reported to be in talks with Aurora Cannabis to develop and launch a drink containing cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive derivative commonly used to provide medical benefits such as relief of muscle cramps. CBD is a chemical found in marijuana plants.

Although discussions between the two companies remain private, a spokesman for Coca-Cola told Bloomberg that the world's largest beverage company "was watching closely the growth of non-psychoactive CBD as an ingredient that has been made right now. "

A spokesman for Aurora Cannabis also told Bloomberg, who called the talks "revolutionary", the company planning to embark on the beverage industry.

Negotiations follow a major acquisition of Coca-Cola in the coffee sector. On August 31, 2018, the company announced the acquisition of Costa Limited under a $ 5.1 billion deal that provides Coca-Cola with a solid coffee platform in different regions of the world. Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa. Costa's operations include a leading brand, close to 4,000 retail outlets with highly qualified baristas, a coffee sales operation, home coffee formats and state-of-the-art roasting.

The acquisition will expand the existing Coca-Cola coffee range by adding another leading brand and platform. The portfolio already includes the leading Georgian market brand in Japan, as well as coffee products in many other countries.
