FREEPORT, Texas – It turns out that In Texas, a handful of unwanted bananas were worth nearly $ 18 million.

According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the amount of cocaine hidden under bananas in Freeport Harbor would have been very high.

The port offered two pallets of fruit to the department because no one has ever claimed them.

Two sergeants were loading bananas on Friday morning when they noticed that one of the boxes looked different.

They cut the suspenders, opened it and found a package filled with a white powdery substance hidden under the bananas.

US Customs and Border Protection officials confirmed that it was cocaine. They searched the 45 boxes and found 540 packages of cocaine with an estimated market value of $ 17.8 million.

"Sometimes life gives you lemons. Sometimes it gives you bananas, "wrote the Department of Criminal Justice on its Facebook page. "And sometimes it gives you something you would never expect!"

Customs and anti-drug officers are investigating.
