They identified a group of compounds called "phenylindans" from the roasting process of coffee beans.

Phenylindans are able to prevent – or rather prevent – the agglutination of two protein fragments (beta-amyloid and tau) that are common in Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

"This is the first time that we have been studying the interaction of phenylindans with the proteins responsible for Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease," said Dr. Ross Mancini, a researcher in medicinal chemistry.

"The next step would be to determine how beneficial these compounds are and whether they have the ability to enter the bloodstream or cross the blood-brain barrier."
