SANTA CLARA – There were eight offensive players missing in the 49ers during their first training in preparation for the Green Bay Packers.
Three offensive linemen (Joe Staley, Weston Richburg and Mike Person), three big receivers (Pierre Garçon, Trent Taylor and Dante Pettis), coach George Kittle and running back Matt are Breida.
"Of course, it's hard to have the guys that will play (not) with you, but it's a good opportunity for the other guys to come in and find some reps, like Richie James and the guys, Vic ( Bolden), "49ers quarterback, CJ Beathard, said, referring to two of the young receivers of the team.
"It stinks, but at the same time, you take it as a benefit to the guys who get the reps, and they will come out better."
Veteran wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, who played Sunday's game against Arizona due to hamstring and thigh problems, was back in full training on Thursday.
Coach Kyle Shanahan said that there was still a chance that Breida could play against the Packers after suffering ankle injury against the Cardinals. Breida did not suffer ankle sprain, Shanahan said. Breida was seen walking without limping in the locker room.
"I do not exclude it," Shanahan said. "It will be day-to-day – always the same case – we always keep our fingers crossed for that."
The 49ers must determine this week whether they want to promote Jeff Wilson or Matthew Dayes of the training squad for the Monday match, with Alfred Morris and Raheem Mostert, if Breida is unavailable.
"It will be a competition between these two," Shanahan said. "It will be a competition between Raheem Mostert and Alfred, who will then try to balance Breida's health, his health and his ability to stay in the game. And how effective we think he can be."
