University football takes a little time to really ride, and Week 4 will probably not be one of the most important weekends. But each data point is a data point.
Below we will follow the impact of each top 25, both before and after the final scores.
Remember the rewards the committee has shown: winning on top 25 teams, winning on teams, winning, winning odd wins, being in Alabama and not being a mid-major. It does not matter the rank of your opponent at the time of sending.
All rankings AP, until the committee starts to release. All ET hours and days Saturday, unless otherwise indicated. Final notes in italics.
Matches in which the winning team will likely win a Week 4 victory at the end of the season.
- No. 1 Alabama (3-0) vs. No. 22 Texas A & M (2-1), 3:30 pm, CBS: The Aggies will probably not end up with an impressive record, but 7-5 against this calendar hold up well, which means a W-grade for Bama on the table.
- Georgia No. 2 (3-0) to Missouri (3-0), noon, ESPN: I think Mizzou is a bowl team and it will be a road victory for UGA as well.
- No. 7 Stanford (3-0) at 20th Oregon (3-0), 8 pm, ABC: The winner is the main challenger of the Pac-12 in Washington. (The Huskies travel to Oregon just after traveling to UCLA and, in 2018, the most pacified schedule decision.)
- N ° 16 UCF (3-0) 56, FAU (2-2) 36: UCF added a nice piece to his New Year's resume, with a rather comfortable win against a potential US Conference champion.
- No. 18 Wisconsin (2-1) to Iowa (3-0), 8:30 pm, Fox: Iowa has handled the business so far, so it's probably a nice win for UW. Or an upheaval, obviously.
Games in which the winner will probably have beaten a decent bowl team (or better).
- No. 5 Oklahoma (3-0) vs. Army (2-1), 7 pm, OR PPV
- No. 6 LSU (3-0) against Louisiana Tech (2-0), 7 p.m., ESPNU: Raising the offense numbers would be good for LSU. The playoff committee says it likes balanced teams.
- No. 8 Notre Dame (3-0) at Wake Forest (2-1), noon, ABC: Could be a pretty tough match!
- No. 10 Washington (2-1) vs. Arizona State (2-1), 10:30 p.m., ESPN: The Huskies can avenge the disconcerting defeat of last year and beat the Pac-12 South champion. (ICYMI, this column will declare Herm Edwards champion of the Pac-12 South until someone else is.)
- No. 14 Mississippi State (3-0) Kentucky (3-0), 7 p.m., ESPN2: After week 4, one of these teams will always control his destiny. Wild!
- No. 17 TCU (2-1) in Texas (2-1), 4:30 p.m., Renard: Either a well-rounded road win for TCU, or Texas who appears as a Big 12 challenger. Settle yourself, I said "challenger", not TEXAS IS BACK.
- No. 21 Miami (2-1) vs. FIU (2-1), 3:30 pm p.m., ESPN2
- No. 24 Michigan State (1-1) to Indiana (3-0), at 7:30 p.m., BTN: Pretty nice win AND a bucket to spit available for both teams.
The committee does not really care about victories against FCS teams, teams with losing records, and so on. Of course, some of these outsiders could still enjoy it.
- # 3 Clemson (3-0) at Georgia Tech (1-2), 3:30 pm, ABC
- No. 4 Ohio State (3-0) vs. Tulane (1-2), 3:30 pm, BTN
- No. 9 Auburn (2-1) against Arkansas (1-2), 7:30 pm, SECN
- No. 10 Penn State (4-0) 63, Illinois (2-2) 24
- No. 12 West Virginia (2-0) vs. Kansas State (2-1), 3:30 pm, ESPN
- # 13 Virginia Tech (2-0) at Old Dominion (0-3), 3:30 pm, CBSSN
- No. 15 Oklahoma State (3-0) vs. Texas Tech (2-1), 7 pm, FS1
- No. 19 Michigan (2-1) vs Nebraska (0-2), noon, FS1
- No. 23 Boston College (3-0) at Purdue (0-3), noon, ESPN2
- # 25 BYU (2-1) vs. FCS McNeese State, 6pm, WatchESPN
