Colorado Parks and Wildlife will once again conduct mandatory tests for chronic wasting disease during the 2018 hunting season to continue to gather more information on CWD and how it could affect our herds. . Voluntary and mandatory sampling is essential for collecting data on this disease that affects the long-term health of our herds.

Beginning in the first week of October, the CPW will send letters to game hunters in the Colorado Rifle season who have been selected for mandatory CWD testing. Thirty-one GMUs are included in the mandatory 2018 sample, of which none have been included in the 2017 mandatory sample.

CPW informs hunters of other changes this year related to MDC samples and positive MD test results. The purpose of these changes is to make CWD's submission and testing program more efficient and cost-effective.

1. CPW will no longer refund license fees to hunters who have harvested a positive CWD animal. This amendment allows CPW to align with other states' CWD regulations and to ensure that the test program receives adequate funding.

2. CPW will no longer offer wood-free replacement permits for the same species as harvested.

3. Hunters whose deer are tested positive for CWD will receive a letter from CPW explaining what we know about CWD, disposal recommendations, and public health information. It will also provide links to online sources for additional information. In addition to this letter, each hunter with a CWD animal will be informed by phone and email.

CPW will continue to reimburse costs incurred for the treatment of CWD positive animals. The standard rate will be $ 100 for commercially untreated animals and $ 200 for commercially treated deer and elk. The maximum refund for commercial processing moose is $ 250.

Updated information on the CWD and 2018 mandatory sample will be posted on the CPW website at cpw.state.co.us/CWD.
