Update 15:15 ET: Main CenturyLink Backbone Provider, who owns Level 3, tells us that he has not had any issues and that his lines have not been compromised – c & d. Is in response to some rumors saying that they could have been.

pm ET: It looks like two of the fiber optic lines used by Comcast have been cut, and because Comcast provides backbone on the Internet in many places, it has eliminated them all.

Finally confirmed by the official accounts of Comcast: [19659006] One of Comcast's Backbone Network partners had a fiber cut that we believe also impacts other suppliers. It currently affects our commercial and residential Internet customers, video and voice. We apologize and work to get services restored as soon as possible

If you could not access your favorite websites today around 12:30 ET, it was not just you.

We first noticed that Comcast's customers took Twitter to complain, but by looking at Downdetector's graphs, you can see how many sites have been affected.

This trend has continued well down the page of monitored sites. It looks like they've started to recover. So, whew!

We asked Comcast, Charter Spectrum and Verizon if they could enlighten us on what happened, but they did not immediately hear. However, Comcast made a statement to CNBC (which Comcast owns) around 1:47 pm. AND stating that he was aware of the problem and that he was working on it.
