(Reuters) – Comcast Corp (CMCSA.O) plans to launch a product that will allow broadband subscribers to aggregate certain video streaming applications, including Netflix, Amazon Prime and YouTube, according to a source familiar with the issue.
The product, which is expected to be launched next year, will come with a voice – activated remote control and will be a decoder first, but it could become an application itself, the source said.
Comcast has not yet decided how much it would charge each month and how many applications will be accessible via the device, the source said.
This development comes as the online online broadcasting market continues to become crowded, while viewers have to navigate between multiple sources.
The new Comcast product will not have cable TV, unlike its X1 platform, but will give users the ability to rent movies and shows, the source said.
Cable operators were wary of the competition from online video streaming services companies, but many concluded that their reception would help fight the disconnection of the cord.
