SILVER BAY, Minnesota (AP) – An annual commemoration ceremony on the north shore of Minnesota is expected to mark the 43rd anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking.
On November 10, 1075, the freighter sank in a violent storm east of Lake Superior. Many crew members had links to northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin.
According to information from the Minnesota Public Radio News, Split Rock lighthouse staff on the North Shore planned Saturday to ring a bell 30 times – one for each man who lost his life in the wreck and one last for all lost sailors.
The ceremony is the only occasion every year where visitors can climb into the tower at dusk and see the lighthouse on.
The wreckage was immortalized by the famous song of Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot.
