Male construction workers have the highest suicide rate in the United States, while teachers and librarians have the lowest rate, according to new federal data.
Suicides are increasing in the general population and a breakdown by occupation shows that construction workers and minors are at the top of the list, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced on Thursday.
"In 2012 and 2015, suicide rates were highest among men in the construction and mining occupational group," the CDC said in a statement.
But the CDC found that in other industries, the suicide rate was increasing more and more.
"From 2012 to 2015, suicide rates increased the most for men in arts, design, entertainment, sports and media (47%) and for women in meal preparation. and related services (54%), "said the CDC.
Reducing suicide rates by profession can help doctors and policymakers understand the causes of the recent increase in suicides.
"The increase in the suicide rate in the United States is a worrying trend that is a tragedy for families and communities and has an impact on the American workforce," said Dr. Debra Houry, Center Director. National Injury Prevention and Control Center. "Knowing who is most at risk for suicide can help save lives through targeted prevention efforts. "
The CDC reported in June that suicide rates had increased by 30% across the country. Nearly 45,000 people committed suicide in 2016, discovered the CDC team.
The new sectoral breakdown shows that the three occupations for men most affected by suicide are construction and mining; arts, entertainment, sports and media; and installation, maintenance and repair. For women, it's the arts, entertainment, sports and the media; protection services and support for health care.
"For both men and women, the lowest suicide rate in 2015 was observed in the education, training and library sectors," the CDC team wrote.
The CDC withdrew a 2012 report that farmers and other farm workers had the highest suicide rates.
The new report on Thursday is based on an analysis of 22,000 people who died by suicide in 17 states in 2012 and 2015.
