It needs to be seen how the virus behaves, a Health Ministry official said.

“There is a well defined surveillance mechanism in the country to identify any symptoms of polio in the affected places and the government is in a position to address any eventuality”. “Around 15 days ago, we had received information from health authorities not to administer polio vaccine manufactured by a particular company”, a health department official said, posted in one of the districts.

After which, the company’s medical investigation was conducted and after the investigation, it was revealed that the company’s vaccination contained the type-2 virus and accordingly, an offense was registered against the company and the director was also arrested.

Last month, surveillance reports had shown signs of the polio type II virus in stool samples of some children in Uttar Pradesh.

On Thursday, the Ghaziabad Police arrested SP Garg, the managing director of the firm, based on a complaint by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation.

The state has directed its officials not to use polio vaccines “contaminated” with type 2 polio virus. But, after type 2 polio virus was eradicated from the country, the state started getting bivalent polio vaccine containing type 1 and type 3 from 2016.

The World Health Organization on Monday said the risk to children from some contaminated batches of the oral polio vaccine is “minimal”, Reuters reported. The latest concerns emerged over the weekend after vaccines produced by privately-held Bio-Med Pvt Ltd and distributed as part of a free government drive to eradicate polio were found to have a strain of the virus that had been eradicated around the world and phased out of vaccines.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), polio has been eliminated from the U.S. since 1979. Officials told Reuters they are investigating why and how the Ghaziabad company, Bio-Med Private Limited, was still producing such vaccines.
