Alameda County Sheriff's Assistants were summoned to the event on Castro Valley Boulevard at approximately 3:45 pm after a report of knife attack, officials said. Witnesses told members that Fazeli approached Peters "aggressively" and insulted Peters' political party and some elected officials, a sheriff spokesman said.

Fazeli allegedly pulled out a switching blade and attempted to stab Peters, but the knife malfunctioned. Peters and Fazeli then embarked on a "physical fight" before Fazeli left the scene, officials said. He was detained shortly thereafter.

Santa Rita Prison mentions Fazeli as a 6-foot-1 cashier weighing 210 pounds.

Peters is a Republican who is attempting to overthrow Rep. Eric Swallwell, D-Dublin, in California's 15th congressional district, which is located primarily in eastern Alameda County. Peters is a supporter of President Donald Trump and his website features Trump MAGA's slogan for Make America Great Again.

In one tweet On Tuesday afternoon, Swalwell wrote that he was "happy to hear that Mr. Peters is doing well".

"But it is NEVER acceptable to use violence to settle political disputes (or disagreements)," the tweet continued. "Fortunately, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office has arrested the suspect."
