Corey Kluber eliminated 11 players in eight innings to record his 19th career win as the Cleveland Indians defeated the White Sox 5-3 on Tuesday night.
Kluber (19-7), who allowed three points, earned 200 strikeouts for the fifth straight season. Kluber has won 18 games in three of the previous four seasons, including his two-year AL Cy Young Award winners, 2014 and 2017.
Omar Narvaez walked and Matt Davidson scored with two outs in eighth, but Kluber retired Ryan LaMarre on a dive.
Second baseman All-Star All-Star Jose Ramirez was hit in the left arm by Carlos Rodon's throw in the fifth inning and came off the board with obvious pain. Ramirez spoke with manager Terry Francona and a team coach but stayed in the game.
Jason Kipnis slammed and Yandy Diaz added a two-point single when Cleveland scored three times in the fifth.
Andrew Miller eliminated three players in the ninth but allowed the potential to join the base. With an exit, Welington Castillo hit Yan Gomes' ball in the third shot.
Miller eliminated Yolmer Sanchez before Tim Anderson reached a single to the right. Miller then drew Daniel Palka to finish the match. The southpaw, who has been on the disabled list three times, recorded his second save and the first since April 9.
Carlos Rodon (6-6) allowed five points in seven innings. Palka and Narvaez scored solo in the sixth game of the White Sox.
Jose Abreu, batter of the White Sox, will miss the series because of an infection in the right thigh. Abreu beats at the .320 pace (16 for 50) with five homers and 12 points produced in his career against Kluber.
Melky Cabrera's RBI double and Yan Gomes' double earned Cleveland a 2-0 lead in the second.
Josh Donaldson, who was acquired from Toronto on August 31, started a lead and scored at the first shot on Cabrera. Donaldson also moved up to fourth place, but he was 0-in-2 and he averaged .133 (2-for-15) in five games with Cleveland.
Palka leads the AL rookies with 25 home runs and has made the road trip to Chicago four times.
In his previous start on Sept. 10, Kluber lasted only 1 2/3 innings and gave Tampa Bay four points. His turn in the rotation was pushed back one day to make it into the first game of the Division Series, which will start on October 5th.
The Indians rested most of their regulars Sunday, one day after winning their third consecutive title in Central AL. Francona returned to her usual lineup Tuesday night, with the exception of designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion, who has missed the last two games after tweaking his ankle.
