NEW YORK – One of the main stories of Daniel Cormier in his title defense against UFC 230 against Derrick Lewis is that his opponent has defeated a lot to reach the point of fighting for the UFC heavyweight.
Cormier (21-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) explained how Lewis's perseverance (21-5 MMA, 12-3 CFU) had pushed him from prison several years ago to an increase in division to the point of in competition for a belt. The champion has only praised "The Black Beast," but Lewis has always been reluctant to discuss his background.
Although Lewis is shy about his story, he said he does not have a problem with what Cormier said, even though he does not consider it necessary.
"It's good with me," Lewis told MMAjunkie during the UFC 230 media day. "I'm mad. I guess he used to try to dig in the background because of his relationship with Jon Jones. He felt compelled to bring this stuff so that I could really try to sell this fight. But I guess he does not really have to do it. "
The UFC 230 takes place at Madison Square Garden in New York. Lewis vs. Cormier features the main pay-per-view card after the preliminaries of FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
If Lewis succeeded, however, he said he would do nothing but stay isolated without talking about him.
"I prefer that people do not talk about me at all," said Lewis. "It would be nice if they forget me next week. I will turn off my phone (after the fight). "
Lewis will not go unnoticed, however, when he takes Cormier's belt. Although "DC" is an important favorite to defend the gold, Lewis knows that he has the ability to end any fight with one shot. He will look for it on the night of the battle.
"Whenever I'm fed up that it hits me and belittles me, I'll go on and try to finish the fight," Lewis said.
