Americans may still be debating costumes for Halloween, but Thanksgiving is already on the schedule as a day off for physical store employees from at least 60 retailers, according to a list established by BestBlackFriday.com.
Many retailers have chosen to remain closed for Thanksgiving, as pedestrian traffic is slowly declining and online sales are on the rise. Costco, Home Depot, Ikea and Sam's Club are among the big retailers planning to take flight on November 22, according to the third annual compilation of BestBlackFriday.com.
But the day after Thanksgiving – known as Black Friday, as it is seen as the day when retailers reach profitability goals or become "in the dark" – is another story. Market research firm ShopperTrack estimates that this year's Black Friday will be the biggest shopping day of 2018.
The National Retail Federation estimated that 174 million people had shopped and online during the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, which ended with Cyber Monday.
In 2017, 57% of those surveyed by BestBlackFriday.com were opposed to Thanksgiving Day store openings, compared to just 16%. However, the latest survey of the site revealed that nearly a quarter of the 1,069 respondents said they were in favor of vacation openings, up almost 9 percentage points from last year.
