Denton County Public Health reports that a mosquito trap in an unincorporated part of Denton County, northwest of Ponder, has recently been tested positive for West Nile virus. As a result, the county began to spray the area Wednesday night and will continue to spray until Saturday morning.
The spraying operation will continue Thursday and Friday from 21 hours. at 5 o'clock the next day.
Residents of the affected area have been informed, according to a press release issued by the county.
DCPH advises residents to take the following steps to minimize the risk of contracting West Nile virus:
- Empty stagnant water in your yard and neighborhood to minimize mosquito breeding sites such as bird baths, flowerpots and clogged gutters. Consider the use of BTI briquettes (Bacillus thuringiensis), often referred to as "mosquitoes", in standing water that can not be eliminated.
- Dress in long sleeves and pants when you are outside and spray thin clothes with a repellent.
- Defend yourself by using an EPA approved repellent. Check ingredients like DEET, picaridin or lemon eucalyptus oil.
