A committed New Jersey couple was killed in a road accident while he was traveling to their wedding last week in Pennsylvania.

Kathryn Schurtz, 35, and her fiance, Joseph Kearney, were heading to Pittsburgh on Wednesday for their big event when they died in a reaction-chain crash, NBC News reported.

The couple was on the I-78 behind a trailer in heavy traffic when they were stopped by another semi-trailer. The impact pushed them into the vehicle ahead, which then struck three other semi-trailers; three of the five vehicles caught fire.

The accident, which injured three other drivers, was the second on the road in minutes, reported The Reading Eagle.

The town of Fanwood, New Jersey, where Schurtz's mother, Karen Schurtz, is a former city councilor, announced her death on Facebook.

"We will remember her for her voracious appetite for reading, her love of cooking and her new pioneering adventures with Joseph," reads Schurtz's obituary.
