Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper
The Dallas Cowboys did not acquire Amari Cooper from the Oakland Raiders for a one or two year lease. After giving Cooper a first-round pick, the plan goes beyond the immediate future of the Cowboys. That was a message that the team's vice president, Stephen Jones, made clear on Monday.
As Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News revealed, Jones said the plan is to sign Cooper to a contract extension.
"In general, we think we will sign Amari for an extension. That goes without saying. We think it was worth the # 1, and I think part of the success is worth it, it's that we end up getting him to sign an extension, "Jones said at The Fan newspaper.
The enthusiasm aroused by the 24-year-old receiver is undeniably high immediately after trading, but there are some reasons to worry. After Cooper recorded two consecutive seasons of more than 1,000 rushing yards to start his career, he finished with just 48 receptions for 680 yards in 2017. Beyond that, he had a brutal start this year.
The beginning or the end of Amari Cooper in 2018
Cooper played six games with the Raiders before being treated and had tremendous potential in two of them. In his two games over 100 yards, the former No. 4 pick has totaled 18 receptions for 244 yards and one touchdown. The problem? His other four games totaled four catches for 36 yards with no touchdowns.
The most surprising difference in these spots is undoubtedly that Cooper has received 21 targets in both good matches, but only 10 attempts in the other four. The big question is whether Cooper is not open or if his former quarterback Derek Carr did not have it.
Anyway, the Cowboys do not seem to care too much about Cooper's struggles and hope he'll be able to take off for his Monday night debut against the Tennessee Titans.
