The Cowboys flew to Seattle, ready to face the Seahawks and the player they had long coveted – Earl Thomas. They tried to negotiate for star safety before the season, offering a second-round pick to try to achieve it.
While the two sides did not speak until Thomas reported to the Seahawks to start the season, many Cowboys are hoping Sunday's game will be used to restart the conversation.
The Dallas contingent arrived in Seattle with an open ear on this possibility. History has shown that there may be at least one reason to hope.
Last year, the Seahawks traded left tackle Duane Brown just after playing his former team, the Texans. This time, the Cowboys could trade against Thomas just after playing in Seattle. Former Seahawks defensive coordinator Kris Richard has called Dallas defense plays this year and is a big fan of Thomas.
As for the Seahawks, they remain attached to Thomas – they have said it publicly. He did not practice on Friday for reasons other than injury, but participated in the visit Saturday and will play.
And although they exchanged a package that included a future second round for Brown before embarking on the long term, he is not Thomas's player. Thomas is a Pro Bowler in his strength, and the fact that Seattle has refused a second round to indicate that they must be blown to exchange. Thomas attended a training camp hoping for a new contract.
