Crab meat imported from Venezuela linked to an outbreak of Vibrio multistate

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating a multistate epidemic of Vibrio parahaemolyticus that has been linked to eating crabmeat imported from Venezuela.

Officials said that 12 people who ate fresh crab meat were infected. Outbreaks have been reported in Maryland, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. Four of the 12 people were hospitalized, but no deaths were reported.

The evidence of the investigation showed that crabmeat was imported from Venezuela. The CDC is still investigating which distributor is responsible for the contaminated product and if it has been sold in other states.

The CDC asks consumers not to eat, restaurants do not serve and retailers do not sell fresh crab meat imported from Venezuela until further notice. Officials said that meat, which usually comes in plastic containers, can be labeled as fresh or precooked. Food contaminated with Vibrio has a normal smell, taste and appearance.
