Crazy back from Ferguson, Pettis' corner stops the fight

LAS VEGAS – In one of the wildest and most exciting fights in the history of UFC, Tony Ferguson (24-3 MMA, 14-1 UFC) defeated Anthony Pettis (21 -7 MMA, 8-6 UFC), whose corner called to stop the fight due to a broken hand after two rounds.

The lightweight fight was the main event of the UFC 229 show today at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It was broadcast after the preliminary games of FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.

At the beginning of the fight, Ferguson moved sideways and looked. Pettis was quick to attack the lead leg of his surgically repaired opponent, but Ferguson took it on the heels, remaining the aggressor and retaining his lead. For his part, Pettis was very successful in finding a home for the counter on the right, touching the chin several times.

Pettis continued to move well outside as the inning unfolded, retiring and opposing, even landing a swiveling big back that briefly forced Ferguson to take a break. But "El Cucuy" returned to the attack quickly, seeking to keep pace and let Pettis on his heels. Pettis' right hand remained effective, although Ferguson responded to the call with a pivoting back. Not to be outdone, Pettis threw a capoeira shot, though the two quickly resume more traditional attacks, trading shots in the pocket in the final seconds before the bell.

Ferguson was again quick early in the second, but Pertris' right hand cleaned it and threw it to the ground. Ferguson got to his feet a bit, to be tagged again. As he fell on the canvas, Ferguson rolled over and rested on his back, Pettis jumping over it. Ferguson lightened his head somewhat and worked his guard, while Pettis' blood ran freely over the two men. When Ferguson used a good-sized ankle to go up, referee Jason Herzog checked Pettis' cut, but the fight continued.

With the crowd on their feet, both smiled at me and touched gloves. Pettis again fired an acrobatic kick that missed before Ferguson advanced with a flurry of punches on the body and head. Pettis kept looking for the right counter, finding some success, but Ferguson's volume began to tire him. Still, with a bloody face, Pettis leaned against the fence and responded to Ferguson's incessant attacks.

A feverish crowd sang and sang in the last minute, as the two blood-soaked fighters remained nearby. Ferguson knocked and knocked, but failed to convince his man to leave, while Pettis was again impressed by an acrobatic kick in the closing seconds of the frame. While the crowd was hoping for a third run to close the classic, Pettis had a broken hand in the scrum and his corner was removed from the fight.
