The New Jersey man's lawyer, whose brother is among the four who were killed in Colts Neck's huge home earlier in the week, who was burned by a suspicious fire, said his customer would ultimately be exonerated.
Paul Caneiro, 51, of Ocean Township, was charged with arson for allegedly setting fire to his own home in Ocean Township on Tuesday morning with his wife and two daughters inside, according to the Monmouth County Attorney's Office.
His wife and two daughters were not injured.
A few hours later, however, the firefighters rushed to a fire raging at Keith, Paul Canerio's home, who was found dead as a result of gunshot wounds in the yard. His wife and two children had died inside.
The four were killed – murdered – before the fire, the authorities said.
However, despite growing suspicions, Paul's attorney proclaimed the innocence of his client.
"His family fully supports him … We are confident that my client will be exonerated once the case is resolved," said Ocean Township-based defense lawyer Robert A. Honecker Jr., former Senior Attorney, Monmouth Attorney Office.
Paul, who has not been indicted in the homicides, but charged with aggravated arson in the fire of his own home, remains in Monmouth County Prison in Freehold. He is scheduled to appear at the detention hearing on Wednesday, according to Honecker.
Honecker said during the hearing that he would ask the judge to release Paul.
"The only charges currently pending in the arson of his own residence," said Honecker. "No further charges are brought against him, and any connection with what happened at Colts Neck is pure speculation."
Honecker said anyone who knew Paul would "attend that, he would love his brother and do nothing to hurt him."
"They were the best friends in the world, his brother was his best man at his wedding and they talked to each other every day," he added.
Keith, 50, was found shot dead in the yard of his property on Willow Brook Road after firefighters rushed to the raging fire at home Tuesday at noon. His wife, Jennifer Caneiro, 45, and the couple's children, Jesse, 11, and Sophia, 8, were found dead inside the residence.
No investigations have been opened into killings by detectives.

In the meantime, a page from GoFundMe, "Help for the Caneiro Family", was created, apparently by a friend of one of Paul Caneiro's daughters.
He says that while the killings make headlines in the national press, "what you have not heard about, is the state in which the rest of the family was left behind. following this tragedy ".
"The surviving family of Caneiro lost the family she loved … Not only does she face the tragic loss of her family, but she has nothing and is nowhere to go. They lost their homes and all their property, and the news does not cover the fact that the family is alone now. "
The creator of the page did not immediately respond to a message via the site.
The detention hearing of Paul Caneiro on Wednesday will be held before Monmouth County Superior Court Judge James J. McGann.
