Thousands of cruise ship passengers on two ships were redirected to Port Canaveral as barrels from Hurricane Florence to North Carolina and South Carolina.
The Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian escape docked in Port Canaveral with more than 4,000 people Tuesday morning after the cruise company was forced to divert the ship from an itinerary that had brought it to Bermuda, in the afternoon. The ship left New York on Sunday with the intention of spending three days in Bermuda starting Wednesday, before having to take a different course.
The passengers told WESH 2 News that some had already felt seasickness due to the rough seas created by Florence. Some plan to return to New York. Other passengers told the television station that they intended to go to the Kennedy Space Center, Walt Disney World or during the hydrofoil rides in the area.
On Wednesday, Royal Caribbean International will also redirect one of its ships, the 2,440-passenger Sea Ray, to Port Canaveral.
The ship, which left Baltimore on Saturday, will sail from Nassau to Port Canaveral, where it will stay until Thursday.
Grandeur was originally scheduled to fly to Bermuda and return to Baltimore on Thursday, but Royal Caribbean changed directions to avoid Hurricane Florence. Now, Royal Caribbean says that Grandeur will return to Baltimore no later than Sunday.
"We will continue to monitor the course of this storm and advise our customers and travel partners as needed," said Owen Torres, spokesman for Royal Caribbean. "On board, our guests will receive daily meteorological information from our chief meteorologist."
Carnival Cruise Line, which is also very active in Port Canaveral, has not yet redirected its ships to the port, but will continue to monitor the situation, spokesman Vance Gulliksen said.
