A long day's trip to Washington turned into another long night for the Cubs, but it was all worth it after a landslide victory of 4-3, 10 innings over the Nationals in Sunday's controversial rain game .
Javier Baez was scooped and made three runs, including the 10th race on a Ryan Zimmerman glove.
The Cubs have returned home with a one-and-a-half lead over the Inactive Brewers of the Central League, with 16 games to play.
In a match that included a bit of everything, the Cubs led a one-point lead in the seventh and took advantage of a few late chances to throw extra innings. Kris Bryant's double started in the 10th before Daniel Murphy reached a goal on the ground, which Wilmer Difo missed, sending Bryant to third place.
Baez first tackled, bringing home Bryant with the draw.
The Cubs took a 3-2 lead in the sixth of the Baez solo circuit, the first of a Cub since Victor Caratini's big slam Saturday in Washington. Steve Cishek escaped a traffic jam at the bottom of the inning, abandoning Adrian Sanchez on the fly twice and two in a row.
Carl Edwards Jr. went into the seventh and withdrew the first two batters during fly-outs before emitting a brace to Victor Robles, who then flew second. In an 11-length bout against Trea Turner, the Nationals shortstop finally settled Edwards with an RBI over David Bote's left-hand header, equalizing the score.
After Justin Wilson replaced Edwards, Turner took third place with ease before Wilson made an intentional walk to Bryce Harper. Anthony Rendon flew to end the sleeve and preserve the tie.
The Cubs started eighth with Anthony Rizzo and Bryant, and Baez made a single intentional walk to charge the bases. But Greg Holland quickly killed the rally by hitting counter-hitters Willson Contreras and Ben Zobrist.
Turner's mistake on the ground of Albert Almora Jr. in the ninth gave a false hope when Terrence Gore launched an attempt to launch Sean Doolittle, who threw the first to double Almora.
Cubs starter Mike Montgomery has only thrown four innings, leaving a 2-1 lead in the fifth after 62 shots.
The Cubs used eight relays and got unmarked runs of 2/3 from Pedro Strop, who fought for himself in the 10th inning and clung to a double final game. Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Strop was injured in his left thigh and would be out for a while.
Randy Rosario finished the match with a perfect 10th for his first save, defeating Ryan Zimmerman to finish.
