Less than two weeks after their season ended unhindered in the NL Wild Card Game, the Chicago Cubs began making organizational changes.
Thursday night, the Cubs reportedly told coach-coach Chile Davis not to return to the team next season. The club has not yet made an official announcement, but this one is scheduled for soon.
As noted our Matt Snyder, the Cubs have suffered inconsistencies and passivity at the plate this season. The 2017 Red Sox dealt with similar problems with Davis as a striking coach. Correlation does not correspond to causality, of course, but there is a link.
Last season, the Cubs scored only one set in 39 games, one behind the 115 defeats of the Orioles in the colors of the MLB and by far the largest number of contenders. Of the playoff teams, the next largest single-point game count is 27 by the Brewers, the team that beat the Cubs in a tiebreaker with Match 163 to win NL Central.
Here are the rankings of the club in 2018:
- Batting average: .358 (third in MLB)
- Percentage based on: .333 (second)
- Percentage of slugging: .410 (13th)
- OPS +: 95 (18th)
- Races by match: 4.67 (11th)
With roughly the same staff in 2017, the Cubs hit .255 / .338 / .437 (99 OPS +) with an average of 5.07 points per game.
The Chicago season ended in the Wild Card Game of the NL, when they scored one point in the 13-round loss to the Rockies at Wrigley Field. Anthony Rizzo and Willson Contreras, several players in the division, had very good seasons. Kris Bryant did the same, but he also had a problem in the shoulder.
The Cubs have not yet named a new coach – it takes at least a few days or even weeks – and have not announced any other coaching changes. Given their composition, the Cubs expect to be re-nominated for the World Series in 2019. They must now find the appropriate support staff.
