Tension has built up over the past 10 days as the Cubs and Brewers have clashed six times.
As the teams geared up for their last meeting of the 2018 season on Wednesday at Wrigley Field, the Cubs had a two-game lead in N.L. The central division and neither club seems to have accumulated pressure or pressure on a crucial match for each team as the playoff scenario narrows and the season returns to its last 17 games for the Cubs and 15 matches for the
As the teams geared up for their September 12th match, the Brewers players gathered on the field without a hint of stress. Christian Yelich played with Travis Shaw in the field, imitating the movement of a thrower as he threw balls at his teammate, who smiled with humor as the ball turned in his glove.
Mike Moustakas, who was taking batting practice outside the cage, picked up a ball and returned it to a young fan wearing a Cubs cap and sweater and motioned him to throw. While the youth was sending balls in turn, Moustakas sent them back to the admiring fan. Other players talked, laughed, did exercises and interacted with the fans.
On the side of the Cubs, Anthony Rizzo quietly chatted in the dugout wearing sports shorts and a t-shirt. Joe Maddon spoke with four fans, who were escorted by former Public Relations Manager Tampa Bay Rays and Maddon's friend, Rick Vaughn. Maddon continued a friendly conversation and took pictures with the four men on the ground. And Tommy LaStella sits on the dugout bench with Hall of Famer member Billy Williams chatting amicably.
The players and coaches of each clubhouse were relaxed and in a good mood before the playoff atmosphere during friendly games.
"That's why you put all the work since the spring training and play this game," said Yelich, "to be able to win and play in October. We set ourselves in position to progress and win the division. We control our destiny with the way we play. With our throws, our bulls, our strikes and our defense, I love our chances. "
And after the end of the night, Milwaukee's chances improved a bit as their 5-1 win brought them back to a division-leading game.
"They have a good team there," said Joe Maddon, director of the Cubs. "With Cain. . . He can do everything. . . and Yelich, he has always been a good player and the late additions of Jonathan Schoop and Moustakas have been a very good team. They have a strong pitch and their field is remarkable with (Josh) Hader, (Jeremy) Jeffress, (Corey) Knebel and (Joakim) Soria. With weapons like this, you have to go early to your debut or you will have to fight to get pirates late in the game.
"But I was very impressed by our guys," continued Maddon. "We had a lot of games and our guys keep fighting and playing baseball. It is not easy to play 30 games over a 32-day period. We lost some that were bad, like this first double-header match in Washington and this second game in Milwaukee last week, but with all the weather conditions we faced and some of the best pitchers we faced , the guys played exceptionally well.
"We continued to win despite the injuries inflicted on key players because of the depth of our work. I trust who we put in there. KB has gone through a difficult period since it was released from the DL. He made good strikes, but he did not hit the ball consistently. I think with many of our guys, throwers have a certain level of fatigue during this long game, which is why some players have soft shots or are not always playing.
"I'm going to rest guys and allow them to regenerate. We want to have KB on track and keep Zo (Ben Zobrist) and Danny (Daniel Murphy) fresh. I think Javy (Baez) needs a day off and we will have (Kyle Schwarber) Schwarbs, (Brandon) Morrow and (Addison) Russell in good health. When they tell us they are ready, we will take them from there, but I am not concerned about how our guys will play in the last few weeks. They know what they need and they know how to win.
The last two weeks will be a thrilling adventure for Cuban fans as Chicago leads the division with a game against Milwaukee and has four games in front of St. Louis before the final two weeks of the season.
The Brewers will face the Pirates (6 games), Reds (3), Cardinals (3) and Tigers (3) in their last 15 games of the regular season. St. Louis has the Dodgers (4), Braves (3), Giants (3), Brewers (3) and Cubs (3) in its last 16 games. And the Cubs will face the National (1), Red (3), Diamondbacks (3), White Sox (3), Pirates (4) and Cardinals (3) in their last 17 games in 18 days.
Do not miss a beat as every game from now on will be a factor in how the post-season is formed.
When Cubs and Brewers players were asked about the upcoming games and the potential to win a division title was within their reach, the majority of respondents seemed to have the same answer as Albert Almora Jr. will win that. We are good enough to do it and I am sure we will do it. "
And remember, the dangerous cardinals think the same thing.
In the last 18 days of the season, it often happens that one or two teams compete for the title of the division. But for the N.L. Central, three teams are in the running and the question is which team will finish in mind? I do not claim any extrasensory perception in this matter, but I can offer you this forecast of the end of the 2018 campaign.
The Cubs will finish as division champions with a record of 95-67, two games better than Milwaukee's 93-69 mark and four more than St. Louis's 91-71 record. Chicago will win the title against the Cardinals in the final weekend of the season and Milwaukee will enter a wild card invitation.
Cubs have depth and a good pitch. . . the bullpen was sometimes debatable, but in the crisis, they will arrive. They have a range that will wreak havoc and if pressed against a wall they will deliver – Rizzo, Bryant, Zobrist, Murphy, Baez, Contreras, Russell, Heyward, Almora. . . and throw Schwarber, Happ and Bote for good measure.
The Cubs will have understood everything at the right time and will play in the playoffs as N.L. team to beat.
