This story has been updated with a series of developments on Wednesday morning.

The Cowboys would have increased their offer for Earl Thomas from a third-round pick to a second, announced Wednesday morning Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said Tuesday night that the Cowboys were only willing to trade a third round for the safety of the star that held up for months.

"Dallas is always interested in negotiating for him," said Rapoport, "but they are only willing to give up a third choice – not the second round and the change that Seattle wants."

The Pro Bowler six times, who has made it clear that he wants to play for the Cowboys, has resisted off-season activities and training camp, while seeking a contract extension in Seattle.

On Wednesday, he announced in an Instagram article that he was putting an end to his wait.

"I have worked all my life for that," wrote Thomas. "I never let myself be won by my teammates, the city or the fans as long as I lived and I do not intend to start this weekend.

"That being said, the lack of respect has been well noted and will not be forgotten. The father's time may have an undefeated record, but I think I intend to triple it for my career."

Rapoport said Tuesday that Thomas had returned to the Seattle area this week – he was gone this summer, at least partly to Austin where he had played for the Longhorns – to see his daughter start kindergarten. At that time, he was not expected to linger and join his team.

"It's not like the Seahawks are working to hold him back," Rapoport said. "There have been no legitimate contract negotiations since the start of the delay".

Thomas brings a summary of 642 tackles, 63 slips and 25 steals to an employer. But he is also 29 and has missed five games in the past two seasons.

It should be $ 10.4 million against the ceiling this year. The Cowboys have about $ 19 million of available space after knocking out long-time kicker Dan Bailey on Saturday. But they are wary of the days of potential gains in the next season for quarterback Dak Prescott, halfback Ezekiel Elliott and defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence.

Thomas visited Jason Garrett outside the Cowboys locker room when Seattle played on Christmas Eve at the AT & T stadium, asking the coach to sign him.

"When Seattle mumbled on the sidewalk," the Texas native reiterated his return to his own locker that night, "please, the Cowboys come looking for me."

The Panthers Cowboys and the Broncos Seahawks start at 3:25 pm Sunday.
