Dallas Cowboys: ‘Football guy’ Amari Cooper quickly picking up Cowboys’ offense

FRISCO — Thursday was the second consecutive day wide receiver Amari Cooper practiced with his new Cowboys teammates inside the Ford Center.

Jason Garrett said the two-time Pro Bowler, who was traded to Dallas on Monday, has been quickly picking up the offense.

“He’s a football guy, there’s no question about that,” the Cowboys coach said. “He knows football, he understands football. He broke the huddle with us, ran plays, didn’t seem to have a lot of issues.

“There will be a lot more stuff coming as we go here, but he’s certainly into it. He’s engaged and football smart and handled the work well.”

The Cowboys are revealing very little about how they plan to use Cooper after returning from their bye week next Wednesday. The hope is that he can give the offense another weapon to open things up in both the passing and running game.

After seven games, the Cowboys rank 29th in total offense and 29th in passing offense.

“You can’t have enough playmakers on your team,” offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said while discussing Cooper on Thursday. “Feel like he’s a guy who can do some of the stuff you want to do on the outside part of the field and he’s been versatile in his career. He doesn’t play just one position. He can move around. He’s got a nice history of being a big-time playmaker.

“All the way from high school days, this guy has a knack of making the big play and I think he can add that to our offense.”
