Dallas Cowboys: The Amari Cooper trade is a way for management to say that the Cowboys have failed with their preparatory season plan

Tim Cowlishaw, sports columnist for SportsDayDFW.com and The Dallas Morning News, author of Drunk on Sports and speaker on ESPN's "Around the Horn" answered your questions in a recent post. Here are some highlights.

How much extra pressure does the Amari Cooper trade put on Jason Garrett?

I think that's where all the pressure goes. You can say that there is also at Dak Prescott, but the Cowboys do not need to make any decisions regarding the upcoming Prescott contract as soon as they have to make one for Jason Garrett. In a sense, that's the way the direction of saying that she failed out of season with her wide receiver approach, here's a catch-up call, now go into the playoffs. And I still believe that's what Garrett has to do.

Can the Cowboys choose a first-round pick for the 2019 project, or should we accept that this does not happen?

You do not trade any of your Pro Bowl players (DeMarcus Lawrence, Jaylon Smith, Zack Martin), so I do not know what the team would do to get back to the first round.

Is it fair to say that DeMarcus Lawrence or Byron Jones will not be here next season?

The Cowboys are about $ 60 million below the ceiling for next year. I think that figure is about right. Regardless, they have a lot of money to spend on players. They are certainly not going to let Lawrence go, and if Jones continues to look solid like he did in the first half of the season, there's no reason not to give him a second contract either. Cowboys are not in a position to choose this type or type. They have a lot of money available.

If Dak does not look great even after trading for Cooper, how and when will the Cowboys get to the quarterback?

First of all, I do not think that's a reasonable way of looking at things. Does Derek Carr look good right now? He has had Amari Cooper over the past four years. So, I do not think the exchange for Cooper instantly raises the appearance of a quarter. Think of the time it took for Dak and Dez to try to get on the same length in terms of course, where to throw the ball, and so on. Cooper arrives in the middle of the season. Dak is a bit bored right now. I do not expect him to spend the whole weekend at The Star throwing passes at Cooper, and even if that happened, without real defenders on the spot, I do not know what that would be worth it. I think Cooper can improve the passing game over time, but I do not know how far.
