Kristi Scales, a junior reporter for the Dallas Cowboys radio network, answered questions about the team during a recent live chat. Here are some highlights.
Question: What was the atmosphere on the sidelines when the Cowboys opted out of quarter and quarter in overtime? Was it … optimistic? Without life?
Balance: The gnashing of Jason Garrett's decision to help 4th & 1 comes from Cowboys Nation and the media, not players. At least, not what I saw on Sunday night in Houston. What was the mood? In fact, as usual. The defensive players tied and returned to the field. Offensive players, I'm sure, for a man, they would have loved to have the opportunity to fight the 4 and 1 (or, as Garrett pointed out, a "long 1"), but if you are wondering if there have been explosions or demonstrative complaints from the players, no. I did not see any. With regard to social media and Cowboy fans at NRG Stadium, the situation was different.
Question: Is NFC East the worst football division?
Balance: Yes, NFC East is the worst division of the NFL in the five weeks of the season. It's the only division that does not boast of a team with a winning record.
Some ugly football games (mostly in attack) are collectively hosted by NFC East this season. In Week 5, the four teams from East NFC lost (though it required a 63-yard winning shot by Graham Gano of the Panthers to defeat the Giants). This was the first time since week 15 of 2013 that the 4 NFC teams had lost in a weekend (credit to Bob Thomas, statistician for Cowboys Radio, for this factoid).
And it may not be that Cowboys fans feel better, but this week's Philadelphia headlines are strangely similar to Dallas: what must be done to keep the Eagles' attack off? Although the callers to Philly's sports conversation use a more colorful language.
Question: Do you think we see Sean Lee back in training before the week off? And what will his eventual return to Leighton Vander Esch mean?
Balance: While Leighton Vander Esch is playing well and Sean Lee (hamstring) is still out of practice, I expect Sean Lee will continue to readjust throughout the week and hope to be able to come back on November 5 against the Titans , a Monday night game (so, one more day of detoxification).
