Here is the summary of the APs:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Cam Newton ran for 58 yards and a touchdown, and Carolina's defense took over as the Panthers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 16-8 in the opening game of the season.

Luke Kuechly had 13 tackles, Kawann Short twice transferred Dak Prescott and Mario Addison had a huge backpack of the Cowboys quarterback with 1:23 left to seal the victory.

Carolina's defense had six sacks in total and limited the Cowboys to 232 yards.

The Cowboys, looking for answers to the attack after the departures of Dez Bryant and Jason Witten, could not do much against a Carolina defense in the first period. The Panthers limited the Cowboys to 60 yards and four first tries to take a 10-0 lead in the locker room.

Prescott finished with just 170 yards and Ezekiel Elliott was tied for 69 yards and one touchdown. The main catcher in Dallas was Cole Beasley, who had seven passes for 73 yards.

The Panthers seemed to have total control when back Alex Armah scored on a 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter to reach 16-0. But Carolina missed the extra point, retaining a two-possession game and giving the Cowboys a boost.

Elliott scored on a 4-yard touchdown run on the next try and Prescott added the 2-point conversion to cut the lead in half. But Dallas' last attempt came to an end when Addison – who had won 11 sacks last year – stripped Prescott of the ball and captain Munnerlyn recovered.

TIME CHANGE: For the first time in franchise history, the Panthers painted their team's logo in the middle of the field.

New owner David Tepper made the decision after buying Jerry Richardson's team in July. The Panthers have always had the NFL "shield" in the midfield – according to Richardson's orders – since joining the league as an expansion franchise in 1995.

GET HIS KICKS: Brett Maher, who replaced Dan Bailey – the second most accurate kicker in NFL history – missed a 47-yard field goal in his first career attempt.

INJURY

Cowboys: Defensive end Randy Gregory suffered a concussion in the first half and did not return.

Panthers: Greg Olsen finished the first half with a foot injury and did not return. He was on the sideline in the second half on crutches with his right foot in the trunk. It's the same footing that Olsen broke last season. Coach Ron Rivera said that Olsen had not suffered the same injury, but offered no further updates. … Daryl Williams, the right tackle for the second All-Pro team, suffered a knee injury in the fourth quarter and was sent off the field. … Linebacker Luke Kuechly injured his left knee in the fourth quarter but returned to the match.
