Amber Guyger, the Dallas off-duty police officer accused of manslaughter for shooting a man in his own apartment, said he shot and killed 26-year-old Botham Shem Jean after ignoring his "verbal orders."
Guyger was returning home after a 12-hour shift in uniform when she entered Jean's apartment Thursday night, taking it for herself and fired twice at Jean. According to a Texas Rangers arrest affidavit released Monday, Guyger said he shot with his gun after John ignored his "verbal orders" and then called 911.
Jean died later in a hospital in the area.
The officer said that she could enter the apartment because the door was slightly ajar and that she initially believed that she was in her own apartment. The lawyer representing Jean's family, Lee Merritt, told local television channel CBS 11 that two witnesses contradict Guyger's statement to the Rangers.
According to Merritt, the witnesses said they heard a woman knocking on the door before filming and saying, "Let me in". He said that Jean was known to be a "meticulous" person who would not have left the door of his apartment ajar.
Guyger said in his statement to the Rangers that the apartment was completely black when she fired. Only after setting the lights on and turning on the lights did she realize that she realized that she had entered the wrong apartment, which is below hers.
Guyger was arrested Sunday on a charge of manslaughter and was released on bail of $ 300,000. Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson told reporters Monday that the Texas Ranger Division, a separate agency of the Dallas Police Service, was overseeing the investigation.
"The Texas Rangers made the decision to issue a warrant for manslaughter," Johnson said. "The final decision, in terms of what this charge will be, will be presented to the grand jury."
Jean graduated from Harding University in 2016, a private Christian institution in Arkansas. His mother, Allie Jean, said her son was a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas.
She told NBC News:[Guyger] took away my heart, she took away my soul, she took everything away.
