ATLANTA – The safety of the Atlanta Falcons Damontae Kazee was sent off for unnecessary roughness at 12:14 of the second quarter after a helmet hit on Carolina Panthers quarterback, Cam Newton.
As Newton slid to the ground, Kazee dipped low and clashed with Newton, causing Newton to go to the sideline to be checked by the medical staff. Panthers receiver Torrey Smith followed Kazee, but Smith was not deported. Smith received a useless roughness penalty to compensate for Kazee's penalty.
Kazee was in the starting lineup Sunday after the Falcons lost early in the season Keanu Neal with an ACL tear at the end of the season. Kazee has actually started free security, with the departure of the free security Ricardo Allen moving to safety.
Jordan Richards entered the game after Kazee was ejected.
Kazee was charged with two helmet offenses during the pre-season.
