Daniel Cormier will defend his UFC heavyweight title for the first time in less than a month.
"DC" is ready to fight Derrick Lewis in the main event of UFC 230, ESPN's Brett Okamoto reported Tuesday afternoon. Okamoto reported on Monday that the title fight was under way but was not yet concluded.
Cormier just won the first round knockout of Stipe Miocic at UFC 226 in July, when he won the heavyweight championship by becoming UFC champion in two divisions. Cormier, who also holds the light heavyweight title, will soon be stripped of this belt. Prior to Miocic's victory, he defended his 205-pound belt in January against Volkan Oezdemir, stopping him in the second round.
Cormier had to face Brock Lesnar early next year. We do not know if this fight is still targeted, knowing that Cormier is now fighting against Lewis in November.
Last weekend, Lewis beat Alexander Volkov by knockout on the main card of UFC 229. Lewis lost two rounds and lost the third before hitting a thunderclap – followed by his Patented floor and book system – with 11 seconds to play. "The Black Beast", who had just won a three-round duel against Francis Ngannou, extended his winning streak to three in a row.
The UFC 230 will be held Nov. 3 at Madison Square Garden in New York City and will feature a lightweight fight between Dustin Poirier and Nate Diaz. It is also unclear whether the fight for the women's featherweight title between Valentina Shevchenko and Sijara Eubanks, considered the main event of UFC 230, will continue as planned, or whether Shevchenko will return to her fight against UFC 231 Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
