HBO brings back Danny McBride for a brand new project, and he's not the only comedy veteran to have signed. The actor Vice Principals will team up with John Goodman for a pilot who will see them embark on the world of televangelism. Yes really. Here's what you need to know about the new potential show.
The project called The Righteous Gemstones which is odd enough to be fabulous. If it is ordered in series, the show will tell the story of a famous televangelist family around the world, but it's not a family that lives a healthy life. Although the family has a history of charity in the name of Jesus Chris, there is also a story of greed and deviance that will undoubtedly give many laughs to people who will bring history to life.
Danny McBride created the project and will write the script, direct the pilot, and star, according to THR. Given his comic background, it is safe to say that he will deliver something hilarious with the pilot Righteous Gemstones . He will play a guy by the name of Jesse Gemstone, which is a gift that the "gems" of the title are not jewels or minerals. Jesse is the eldest son of the Gemstone family and the one who will take over from his father … if he can escape the shadow of his father.
Although he lives under his formidable father, Jesse wants to forge his own path, and in doing so, requires the loyalty of the people around him. He prefers to be surrounded by followers and takes no shit from any of them. A man in touch with modern people in the church, he adapts his father's messages to a wider audience.
It will obviously take an expert actor to work in front of Danny McBride in the Gemstone family; Fortunately, John Goodman should be more than capable of doing the job. Goodman will play the role of Eli Gemstone, a.k.a., head of the family and televangelist leader. Almost always reluctant to compromise, he is a force to be reckoned with in the televangelist game. He has a worldwide reputation through his weekly television show, and he holds nothing back by leading the charge for salvation. He loses a little of his touch when The Righteous Gemstones takes down, but he must always be obeyed without any argument from anyone.
Given that John Goodman is currently attached to The Conners on ABC, it should be interesting to see how he balances the two series if The Righteous Gemstones marks a series order . The HBO show was likely to run for fewer episodes per season than most network shows, and The Conners will be an ensemble series including the casting of Roseanne ] besides Roseanne Barr herself, so could be as simple as budgeting her time to work as a regular on both. Maybe The Righteous Gemstones could finally give him that Emmy!
We will have to wait and see. The Precious Precious Stones have just been commissioned to pilot, so there is no saying at this point if it will become a show. That said, Danny McBride is a proven force on HBO, and I would be surprised if the premium cable network did not give him a shot with a full season.
