Atlanta Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson has been diagnosed with a partially torn ligament in his left hand, the team said on Wednesday.
Swanson, who had an MRI in Atlanta on Wednesday, will be treated daily for the remainder of the regular season and will be re-evaluated next week before the playoffs of the national league division, which begins Oct. 4.
He left Tuesday the 7-3 victory against New York Mets with what the team has described as a pain in the left hand. He missed 13 games earlier in the season with left wrist inflammation.
"He heckled and something did not go well," manager Brian Snitker told the press on Wednesday. "That's why he's a little alarmed me." He felt good, he was not complaining about anything.
"… it's your hand." It's a big problem in this game. We'll just have to wait and see. "
Swanson, the first pick in the 2015 draft, had a rebound season after a disappointing 2017 year.
Charlie Culberson will serve as a short-stop while Swanson will be absent.
"It seems like it's just something to rest," Snitker told reporters about Swanson's injury. "If you play through that, it's just one of those things you have to play, so let's hope it's not something more than that."
