Daredevil Season 3, Episode 10: Narrative of Karen's Past

Daredevil focuses on Karen in this episode. We have a glimpse of his past and what really happened to his brother.

At the beginning of "Karen", we are seeing a return to some of Karen's holiday days. She does and sells drugs, which is in line with the way Matt finds it in comics. She also works at a restaurant called Penny's Place in Vermont, a family owned business.

Although I think they did a better job with the character in the series than when he started in comics, the omission of partying and drugs would have been perfectly acceptable. Flashback is more about family dynamics than anything else.

His brother, Kevin, assures that she enters the university (without telling him) so that she can get out of it. At this point, her mother is gone and her father is struggling to hold dinner. Her boyfriend wants her to continue to sell a little more for him, which would bring him more money.

Karen's father recalls her at dinner so that they can celebrate her arrival in Georgetown. However, the party turns sour when Karen raises her mother. They had a framed lotto card and Karen has the nerve to break the glass and scrape it. She ends up leaving and deflating with her boyfriend.

Kevin burns Todd's caravan and she shoots him when he starts his brother and knocks him out. She should not drive, but she does it anyway and starts screaming after Kevin. She spills the car and Kevin dies in the accident. Although that explains why her father did not want her to come home, this episode takes a little time to explain that.

When we return, Karen is in the church and Father Lantom brings him food. He invites her to Mass and she asks him what you do when you realize that you have lost. He tells her about Matt and how he has to live with him, blaming him for his actions. He quotes John Lennon and then tells him to join the mass.

Fisk compares Dex to James and tells Dex that it is Karen who murdered him. Dex was ordered to kill Karen as their stunt at the Bulletin did little to discredit her. We then return to Matt's penthouse and replay the moment he hears the radio call on the monitor. The woman told him that he was leaving, security would be tripled and that he would have no other chance with Fisk.

Ray drives Dex to church and wants to know what he's going to do. However, Matt chooses Karen rather than Fisk and shows up just after Karen is revealed. Dex kills father Lantom and Matt loses him. Father Lantom's last words to Matt are: "Please, forgive us."

The fight between Matt and Dex is another good fight, even if Matt does not win it exactly. Karen helps her just before Dex can kill him. However, Dex still fights after falling on the rail. The episode ends with Matt still fit. So far, he could only retain Dex at best, which is not a good thing. Daredevil continues to present exciting fighting scenes while advancing the story, even if they spend too much time on Karen's past in this one.
