Davia Bunch of Spartanburg was crowned Miss South Carolina on Saturday in the final of the competition that took place at the historic Township Auditorium of Columbia.
Bunch, who competed as Miss Spartanburg, edged first runner-up Sydney Ford of Gaffney, who competed as Miss Greater Greer
Becoming Miss South Carolina was emotional on many levels for the Bunch, a ballerina . She lost her mother to leukemia in January 2013, when she was only 15 years old.
"It was an eight-year battle, with which I grew up," she said. "But now I can defend people with leukemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers, it's something that touches my heart and forces me to fight every day."
Bunch was double winner of the talent and jersey. She played In Pointe for "Feel It Still".

The contest began Tuesday night with three days of preliminaries for the Miss Teen Contest and the Miss South Carolina Contest. The participants were divided into groups and for three days they competed in the talent, swimsuit / evening dress or stage categories.
The winners in each category were announced each night, and these women made up the group of 16 finalists for the Miss South Carolina teen final on Friday and the Miss South Carolina final on Saturday.
This is the last year of swimwear competition for Miss South Carolina and Miss America. Next year, the contest will feature a fitness component with participants performing a defined fitness routine of jumps, squats, pumps and poses.
The other finalists were Miss Clemson, Sydney Sill; Miss River City, Morgan Romono; and Miss Columbia, Alexandra Badgett.
